  • Christmas Traditions

I just sent the following email out to all my family and friends:

Okay, so I've been dying to ask for awhile what traditions people have for the holidays.  Since I've only spent one Christmas married and on my own, I don't have too many traditions started.  I did get to decorate my first tree last year.  Gregg and I also decided to give each other one present to open on Christmas Eve, which is the tradition with some of you.  That was nice.  We both picked the movies we had wrapped for each other and picked one to watch that night which was It's a Wonderful Life.  I think this year's Christmas Eve movie will be A Nativity Story.  My parents were over too and received their gift from us since it would be the first time I wouldn't be spending Christmas morning with them.  I also tried to start a Christmas morning tradition of making a special breakfast for Gregg.  It was a recipe I got out of my Gooseberry Patch Holiday cookbook.  This year I asked Gregg what some of the traditions he grew up with were.  One of them was that his mom made his favorite Vanilla Wafer, banana pudding dessert.  One year I guess she found red and green Vanilla Wafers.  Gregg gets excited about that memory every time he tells it.  So I'll probably add that as a Christmas Eve tradition this year.  [laughs] I also learned from my sister-in-law, Ellen, over Thanksgiving vacation with Gregg's family out in Texas that all the kids were barricaded in a room Christmas Eve with snacks, movies, and games to keep them preoccupied while their parents wrapped their presents in the living room.  Ellen and Gregg would find ways to sneak out of the room early in the morning while it was still dark outside and take a peak at what their presents were.  But that stopped when Gregg was I think 16 because he felt bad about it.  When Ellen told me that I thought proudly, "That's my Greggy."

I would love to hear about your Christmas traditions.  Maybe I'll adopt some of them as my own.
